Benefits of Role Play as Part of Early Childhood Education Activities

Role Play is a part of eary childhood education activities. It brings benefits to child social development. Parents and early education teacher should give plenty opportunities of role play for kids and monitor their activites. Kids develop certain skills and knowledge through role play:

Imagination and Creativity
Problem solving
Essential living skill
Language skill
Social skill
Leadership skill
Self-esteem

In role play, kids pretend to act as someone else. There are 3 different kinds of role play:

Imitating Daddy and Mommy

Do you know who are kids’ idols? They are daddy and mommy. They will pretend to play what daddy and mommy are doing. Kids will try to help you with your housechores from cooking to cleaning and washing the car. Toys that support role play: kitchen toys, food toys, doll house and baby toy

Acting as People in Real Life Situation

If you have an occupation, they will observe how you do in your job and they will imitate what you are doing. If you are home based working mom, what you are doing in your job or business will be obvious to them. They also observe people they meet in their life such as teacher, doctor, nurse, waitresss, policeman, construction workers and more. They will pretend to play as these people. Teacher is the closest person to your kids. They will imitate what their teachers are doing at school. You can observe from your kids’ behaviour if your kids’ teacher is a good teacher. Role play gives them a better understanding of adults working life. Toys that support role play: doctor play set and tools toys.

Acting as Favorite Idol or Imaginary Person

Kids also start to have their favorite idols such as Barbie, Princess or Superhero. They will collect figurine toys, stationery, t-shirts and memorabilia with pictures of their idols. The particularly like costume dress-up. They will act like their idols, play dress up, dance and sing or repeat dialogues from the story or the movie. This kind of role brings them to become someone else, her imaginary idol. The dialogues they repeat will build their vocabulary and enhance language skills. Role play is to encourage reading in young children.

Role play as part of early childhood education activities brings fun and kids will learn faster if they have fun. Make the role play as school production is great as the applause from the audience will give kids encouragement and build self-confidence. Below are some pictures from my kids’ school production. They dressed up as a Gingerbread man, pretend to play as Aladin storybook, dance Doremi, High School Musical and CAN CAN DANCE.

Benefits and Tips for Cooking with Kids

I mean here is a real cooking, cooking for the family food. I just find out that my kid, a preschooler can do a lot more in cooking than I ever think. She pretends to cook with her food toys, so why not introduce her to the real world of cooking. Cooking can be a new learning experience for the kids. I begin to involve her in the cooking preparation. I get a help, she is having fun and we engage in conversation during cooking. In her eyes, I’m the best cook though I’m not. I find that kids learn and benefit from cooking.

Develop Fine Motor Skill – kids learn how to use their fingers to pull the vegetables. They are able to use the cutlery knife to cut the vegetables in pre-determined sizes or slice the raw ingredients.
Adopt Living Skill – I see “able to cook” as a living skill when they grow up as an adult.
Develop Learning – I include maths and science into cooking. Maths, kids learn to estimate the length of vegetables they should cut or pull. I involve counting and basic maths (addition and subtractions) by saying: I take away 2, how many are left? I add 2, how many do you see now? When she asked: when are the vegetables going to cook? I said: count until 50 or 100 and you shall see if the vegetables soften and change colors. Science, kids learn all kinds of vegetables and spices: the name, the texture, the fragrance or smell, the changes of vegetables after being cooked. This cooking experience will encourage kids to eat vegetables more. My kid usually wants to taste first after the cooking is done.
Fun - Sometimes, we play guessing game during cooking. We take turn to ask questions. She asks question too, such as: what kind of fruit produces milk? and she will hard to guess when I ask: what veggie that has golden teeth and blonde hair?
Pride - kids will feel proud if they can do adult’s or mommy’s job. Do remember to praise them for encouragement.

Besides kids benefit and have fun from cooking, you shall take safety precautions. I have my safety tips for cooking with kids:

Set the rules for DON’Ts and let the kids know. Don’t use the kitchen knife, instead use the cutlery knife. Don’t turn on the gas cooker by yourself.
The kids should wash hands before and after cooking for hygienic reason and do put the apron to protect their clothes.
Don’t let the kids sample the ingredients before they’re cooked.
Don’t let the kids handle the poultry, meat or raw seafood.
Always supervise and check the kids’ work.
Allocate short time period otherwise the child will get bored and overworked.

Fun With Simple Shape Pictures

What can the children do with the picture except for colouring ? How about COLLAGE and LACING ? They are FUN to do. What we need is a simple big picture print and you can find all simple big pictures from COLORING SIMPLE SHAPES. I would suggest that you print using a thick paper, MANILA PAPER. Once you have the big picture print, your child can do COLLAGE or LACING.

COLLAGE. You can use fabric of old clothes or towel, colour paper or just simply old magazines and cut them into small pieces. Encourage your child to do the cutting by himself to train his motor skill. Cutting the pieces into pattern shapes such as triangle, square, circle looks even better. Then all small pieces are sticked within the picture.

LACING. Your child may want to colour the picture before you punch the holes around it. Then, he can start lacing with one or more colour strings.
