How young a child  shall use the internet? Internet is a great sources of abundant information and kids are encouraged to use the internet to do their school projects. What is the clue when your kids are ready for the internet? If your kids are able to write and able to read, it’s about 7 or 8 years old, they will be ready for the internet.

It is important that parents must know about the internet safety for kids so they are able to guide their kids.

Here are some guidelines that I share for internet safety for kids under 12:

1. Internet Security Protection

You can install internet security protection software with parental guide so you are assured that your kids are protected from viewing adults websites. Please tell your kids to be cautious not to download softwares from unreliable resources.

2. Setting up First Email Account

I would recommend Gmail and you must set up an email for your kids and do some important settings in SETTINGS SECTION before giving the email account to your kids. You must have an access to your kids’s email if they are under 12 so you can monitor their incoming emails and you may filter them. Please tell your kids not to share email password with anyone else

3. Setting up First Facebook Account

When you child use social networking sites such as Facebook, there is a possibility that strangers will make friends with your kids. Though this site is for 18+ adults, I have noticed kids are using facebook. My eldest kid, 9+ asked for her facebook account because her friends are using it. I have seen that some parents of my kids were not familiar with facebook.  What happened here was their child learned from another child on how to open a facebook account. Without a proper guidance from parents, parents can’t monitor their kids activities in facebook.  I did some settings in ACCOUNT SETTINGS and PRIVACY SETTINGS and limit their exposure to friends only. I told her to be cautious to make friends with unknown friends.

4. Browse Sites that Your Kids Visited

Occassionally, you need to browse what sites that your kids visited from the past history and also from their bookmarks. You can bookmark educational sites for your kids and encourage them to visit these sites.

5. Set Time Limit for Internet Use

During weekdays, kids can use internet to search information for school projects only.  During weekends or school holidays, you need to set time limit for internet usage otherwise they will become addicted to it.

If parents have a good understanding about internet safety for kids and they know how to use computer and internet, they will be able to protect their kids and ensure their kids to stay safe online.

Children can be very trusting and want to be liked by people which makes them vulnerable to adults who manipulate them and cyber bullying from friends.

There are always two moments: psychology and parental control software. If a child wants to do something, he will by all means. I think, you first need to make some kind of bargain with your kid. I prefer not to be a time cop for my son, so I explained to him, that I was only trying to help him manage his personal time efficiently, and then we together installed a program, called TimeBoss (http://nicekit.com/index.htm) – good name for the situation, ya;), and I let the boy make all the settings, like setting the limits for internet and social networks and games (those can be different limits) and compulsory brakes in the use of PC himself… And now, I don’t need to run the program in the “stealth mode”. Take care)))

Very good tips you have posted. Kids these days need all the help they can get as well as responsible parents. There are many parents who don’t teach their kids properly, let alone nurture them. Keep up the good work and God Bless You

I think there are a lot of creeps online, it’s especially important for children to know the dangers on social networks. It’s always important to be aware of who your friends are online as they might not be who you think.
