Green Living is about how we live to depend on Eco friendly natural products which are safe for our health and our environment. Please take a look at the following green living tips to compare between toxic household cleaner and Eco friendly natural product.
Toxic Household Cleaner
What do you read on the label of your household cleaner? Most commercial household cleaners in the market give you the straight solution: kills 99.9% germs, tough on stains (means remove stains fast). Many household cleaners rely on chemicals to get rid of the dirt/stain and germs. Chemicals are inexpensive ingredients to produce and they work on stains and germs effectively. The cleaning products that kill germs are even more dangerous than the germs themselves. Your skin can absorb the chemicals when you are in direct contact with the liquid. Some release their toxins as fumes, therefore they have strong odour. Mothers who breast feed and young children should be cautious when they use toxic household cleaners at their home.
How Toxic is Your Household Cleaner?
The chemicals used in household cleaners are loaded with carcinogenic and neurotoxins ingredients and some are the same chemicals used in the pesticide. You may read the label: chlorine, ammonia, formaldehyde and so on. This is the reason why cancer is on the rise not only for human but also for pets. Use gloves, cover your mouth so you don’t inhale while cleaning and rinse with water after cleaning are ways to minimize the danger of chemicals exposure. Can’t you imagine that you clean the floor and wipe the table and your kids touch the surface with their hands? They may put their hands into their mouth. It means that they may swallow a small percentage of these chemicals. You may want to save on the household expense but it may cost your health over a prolonged period and the environment suffers too.
Eco Friendly Product

While I appreciate your concern for consumer safety, I should point out that chlorine is not classified as a known or possible carcinogen by EPA, the National Toxicology Program (NTP) or the International Agency for Research on Cancer (IARC). Chlorine plays an important role in disinfectants (such as bleach) that kill germs, including bacteria and viruses—the bugs that make families sick.
Just ¼ cup of bleach in a gallon of water can be applied to frequently touched hard surfaces to control germs. And as bleach destroys germs, it degrades mostly into salty water, so it’s not harmful to the environment.
I hope this is helpful.
Best,
Jeff

Hi Jeff, thank you for your visit and it’s an honor to have your comments. Thank you for your input as well. How about the safety of chlorine for our health? It’s stinging on the skin and the odour is very strong.
Hi Learning Mama,
Thanks for your kind words.
When mixed and handled appropriately, disinfectants such as chlorine bleach solutions effectively destroy the germs that linger on hard surfaces, just waiting to infect human hosts. It is not necessary to apply bleach full strength: Just ¼ cup of bleach in a gallon of water is appropriate to kill the flu virus, for example, and not as harsh as you suggest. I know somebody who got a serious skin rash using store-bought household cleaners. That toxic stuff is scary!
Thanks for the informative post!

Water is the most vital of all natural resources. Without water no life can exist. It is the existence of water on this planet of ours that has made it possible for us to live here.
Thanks for educating me on this arena of eco friendly living, something I’ve lagged behind on: the cleaning products I buy. I’ve almost never considered eco-friendliness when choosing cleaning products, being a clean freak I thought clean was good. There are just so many choices we get to make to help make our lives and habits eco friendly. I also appreciate Jeff Sloan’s comment about how bleach is a good way to safely kill the germs while not harming the environment. I will begin using a bleach water bleach mix because of seeing this conversation rather than those spray mixtures I’ve always gotten.
If you ask me, things like vinegar and baking soda are some of the best cleaning products around. I use them for almost anything, laundry and cleaning alike. Highly recommended!

I buy an eco-friendly cleaner at the local store. It is a little more expensive but well worth it. I cant be bothered making my own up, so much else to do round the house when I get in after work.
