Stay at Home Vacation or Staycation can be inexpensive and great as learning resources for kids. Families with tight budget can still make stay at home kids happy with staycation. In this coming school holidays, we also don’t plan to go anywhere so I’m looking for staycation ideas for my kids. Staycation isn’t something new. When I was a child, there’s no luxury overseas vacation, so staycation was the option during school holidays.

I list down 8 great staycation ideas for kids as learning resources:

  1. Explore Your Own City. Go to places of interest in your city or drive to new places in another part of your town for lunch or dinner. Try to be a tourist in your own city.
  2. Go to the Park. There are plenty things to do at the park. If you only have one child, it will be a better idea to organize with other parents to take along their kids. When kids get together, they have plenty ideas of play. Kids can cycle, play ball or sports, blow bubbles or just explore the park by collecting things that they find in the park.
  3. Learn New Life Skills. Kids can help you with cooking or you can teach them about simple needlework, typing or other life skills.
  4. Teach Kids to De-clutter and Organize Their Belongings. You can give them responsibility to clean their belongings such as school bag, school shoes and toys. Ask them to sort out or de-clutter their belongings that they don’t need them anymore.
  5. Learn New Sports. When kids have more time during holidays, they can learn to ride a bicycle or join sports club such as swimming, soccer or tennis.
  6. Visit Relatives or Friends’ Home. Kids like a new environment such as homes of relatives, grandparents or neighbors. They can bring their toys and play together with cousins or neighbor kids. Please don’t forget to teach etiquette or good manners to young kids before they play at friend or neighbour’s house. Young kids are spontaneous and they behave as if they are at home.
  7. Water Play. Kids like water play. If you don’t go to Water Park, water play in inflatable plastic pool at home will replace a trip to Water Park.
  8. Make Crafts or Projects for Kids. Origami is one resourceful paper craft. There are also crafts or projects that relate to subjects at school such as history, science or nature. My kids have this book, 120 Great History Projects: Bring the Past into the Present with Hours of Fun Creative Activity and some projects were tried and tested at school during history lesson. There are customs & arts, recipes, house or building models, fashion and accessories and more. You can browse Science Projects for Kids  or Nature Crafts for Kids books to get more ideas.

Today’s working parents often have no time and ideas for staycation.  Learning centers see this opportunities and offer staycation activities for kids during holidays. It can be in the forms of  tuition or classroom learning, arts, drama, workshop or camps. In General, staycation is good learning resources for stay at home kids to develop personally and learn new things during their holidays. It is up to parents to decide if they have time to do it on their own or register their kids with learning centres for staycation activities.  If you have your own ideas about staycation, please leave comments below. I will appreciate your contribution.

If the word stay cation comes with the kids, I would like to say that it’s a really great way to maximize your kids. It’s nice way to introduce your baby with the nature, and who have the cash enough can also use this way too.
